- Key Properties
- Sequestration:The phenomenon of binding metal ions in soluble complexes, thereby preventing the formation of undesirable precipitates or the occurrence of other detrimental side reactions. For example, sodium tripolyphosphate will combine with calcium and magnesium ions to form soluble but undissociated complexes, which remain in solution in the presence of precipitating anions.
- Buffering:The agent that provides the desired pH level and maintains the proper alkalinity in solution. Sodium tripolyphosphate has modest buffer capacity; that is, it exhibits a relatively constant pH or degree of alkalinity in solution regardless of the concentration or temperature of the solution.
- Deflocculation: the process by which aggregates of particles are broken up into individual particles that are then dispersed throughout the solution such as the dispersion of household soils in water.
- Detergency: the capability of removing soil from the surface to which it is adhering. Soap and synthetics built with sodium tripolyphosphate show substantially greater detergency than either compound alone.
